FAWCO Launches Youth Cultural Volunteers Program
Children from around the world will travel to Dubai during the holy month of Ramadan to raise their awareness of social issues and experience cultural diversity.
- (1888PressRelease) July 11, 2013 - FAWCO is proud to announce the launch of FAWCO Youth Cultural Volunteers in support of the UN's initiative to engage today's youth and raise their awareness of social issues and cultural diversity. The inaugural project in Dubai will be hosted July 16-23 by the American Women's Association (AWA) of Dubai. Seven children of FAWCO club members between the ages of 15 and 17 will travel from The Netherlands, Ireland, England, Germany, and Switzerland to participate in the program's launch. They represent the American Women of Surrey, American Women's Club (AWC) of Bern, American International Women's Club (AIWC) of Cologne, AWC Dublin, AWC The Hague and AWA Dubai.
AWA Dubai has developed a diverse cultural program for the FAWCO Youth Volunteers, including working at local charities and experiencing Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting. Al Ihsan Charity Association, one of the charities where FAWCO Youth will volunteer, assists families with limited income and encourages them to be active members of society. The Ramadan Rations Project provides families in need with food during the holy month of Ramadan, which will take place this year from July 10 to August 9.
FAWCO Youth participants will also volunteer at the Angel Appeal with The Mission to Seafarers. Angel Appeal supports seafarers who live and work on ships for long periods of time, far away from their families. The MV Flying Angel is a Seafarers Support Boat that travels to different ships and provides seafarers access to telephone and Internet to contact their families. AWA Dubai is a strong supporter of The Angel Appeal.
In addition, the participants will be introduced to the sights and sounds of Dubai and learn about the customs and traditions of Ramadan which include abstaining from food and water from sunrise until sunset. Participants will write essays about their experiences and together they will create a video about the life lessons they learned as FAWCO Youth Volunteers.
This inaugural project will help FAWCO design future projects which they plan to organize annually. FAWCO member clubs will come forward to offer FAWCO youth both volunteer and cultural encounters for one week during the summer. These exchanges will allow FAWCO teens to have an in-depth experience, raising their awareness of social issues and cultural diversity, while staying with FAWCO families around the world.
Founded in 1931, FAWCO is a global network of independent volunteer clubs and associations. The nearly 70 member clubs in 37 countries have a total membership in excess of 15,000. FAWCO serves as a resource for its members, promotes the rights of U.S. citizens living overseas, and contributes to the global community through philanthropy and global issues task forces. A not-for-profit New York-based corporation, FAWCO is also a UN-accredited NGO with Special Consultative Status to the UN Economic and Social Council. The philanthropic arm of FAWCO - The FAWCO Foundation - is an independent entity, which has donated more than $1,000,000 in education awards and development grants since its inception in 1967.
