(1888PressRelease) October 02, 2013 - Japan hopes to demonstrate its technological advancements at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics through the newly developed automatic voice translation that translates Japanese into English within a shorter space of time.
The technology should be commercialised by 2020 and presented at the Acoustical Society of Japan conference on September 25 in Toyohashi.
The automatic voice translation will be used in reporting news of the games to the rest of the world, like having a simultaneous interpreter on hand for the media.
Satoshi Nakamura, who led the research team that developed the technology commented; "We want to make possible the simultaneous interpretation of long speeches and news reports with this technology," Satoshi Nakamura is a professor at the Graduate School of Information Science, Nara Institute of Science and Technology.
In Japanese, the meaning of a sentence can only be understood after the sentence has finished because the verb only comes at the end of a sentence. When using an automatic translation system, the longer the sentence, the longer the time-lag. To overcome this problem many interpreters will deduce the sentences by translating a Japanese sentence before it has finished.
Research into the analysis of the arrangement of words and phrases of both Japanese and English started two years ago, started by Nakamura and other scientists after building a computer database of 500,000 Japanese sentences, corresponding English translations and 2.4 million Japanese words and their English translations.
A program was then devised to determine if a machine can start translating from Japanese before the end of the sentence. Researchers say the translation machine was able to reduce the time gap by an average of 5 seconds with the use of the existing software to one or two seconds, without undermining the accuracy of the translation. Scientists are now working on creating new technology that will interpret English into Japanese.
The technology was tested at a lecture and its speed and accuracy was comparable to a simultaneous interpreter with one years' experience.
A spokesman for Wordtrans commented "Because of the time delay in translating from Japanese into English; due to the differences in sentence structure of the two languages, the new technology should definitely improve efficiency and reduce costs."
