  • (1888PressRelease) March 22, 2013 - MINNEAPOLIS - Poorly configured testing machines waste time and money, but TestResources aims to help avoid that with their video about universal test machine configuration released March 13, 2013.

"Universal testing machines can handle a wide variety of tests, and materials, all with one machine," says TestResources Application Engineer Sean O'Fallon. "However, we find that there are a lot of steps users misunderstand in the process of designing their machine."

Material testing standards don't always translate into an easy to follow processes, says O'Fallon. In their latest video release TestResources recommends 3 steps that make it easier to configure ideal universal test machines. Here is an outline of the 3 steps in the video.

    • Load Frame: Larger load frames often mean paying more for a machine. However, it is better than finding out your new system does not have enough load capacity and you now need to replace the whole machine.

    • Space Requirement: It is crucial to consider all of the factors that affect the size of a universal testing machine when building it. These factors include the size of the specimen; the fixtures; environmental chamber; the space necessary for travel required to setup and perform the test.

    • Variety of Tests: A machine that repeatedly runs a fewer amount of different tests may use a different controller than a machine that is required to perform a variety of different tests.

These 3 criteria form the foundation of testing machine configuration, but are not enough to build an effective testing system.

"Experts in their particular field aren't necessarily experts on test equipment," says O'Fallon. "There are a lot of unique situations in testing that require experience in order to save money or time when using the testing machine they've built. Talking with someone who has configured systems is a quick and easy way to double-check your thinking."
