Agora Gallery begins the new year with Kaleidoscope of the Mind, an illuminating expedition into the latest in contemporary art. The exhibition showcases both abstract and surreal-tinged images, with an emphasis on painting. The most striking thing about all six participants is their willingness to experiment. One artist combines frenzied splashes of paint with precise compositional elements, and executes the entire painting while suspended on a catwalk above it. Another painter depicts physical and emotional pain with slashes in the canvas itself. A mixed-media artist juxtaposes the orderliness of silky, painted writing with the primal chaos of resin, resulting in pieces of unusual visual depth. There is one purely representational artist in the exhibition, whose oils dance with such vibrant and unexpected colors that they seem to come from a brighter reality than ours.
