In the run up to the conference, Dr Eric Noehrenberg is interviewed by SMi Group to discuss his thoughts on Brexit and UK will no longer be part of the EU free market.

    Snapshot of Eric’s interview:

What kind of impact do you think a no deal Brexit will have on the field of Parallel Trade following the end of the transition period?

“A “no-deal Brexit” will certainly make parallel trading between the EU and the EEA more difficult, as goods placed on the UK market by, or with the consent of, the right holder after the transition period will no longer be considered exhausted in the EEA. This means that businesses exporting these IP-protected goods from the UK to the EEA will need the right holder’s consent. Likewise, goods imported from the EEA into the UK will also need the permission of the rights-holder in the UK before importation can legally take place. In my view, this will lead to better quality of supply and greater safety among UK consumers.”

What are your thoughts on how COVID-19 is currently impacting the Parallel Trade industry and your role?

“Once again, an international health care crisis illustrates the dangers to consumers posed by parallel trade and resulting drug shortages. That is why governments have taken strong action to protect their countries’ respective drug supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. A case in point arose in March 2020 in the UK, where the UK Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has banned 80 "crucial" medicines which are in high demand across Europe from parallel export, to ensure a consistent supply for UK patients who need them.”
