European Organ Transplant and Donation Experts Meet in Madrid
The meeting has been organised by the European Commission in collaboration with Spain's National Transplant Organisation (ONT) and Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality.
- (1888PressRelease) June 29, 2013 - Madrid, Spain - Dozens of organ donation and transplant experts and journalists will be meeting in Madrid tomorrow at an event entitled "Transplantation & blood transfusion: contribution of the European Union to improve transplantation and blood transfusion practices in Europe".
The Spanish National Transplant Organisation (ONT) says "the European Commission (EC) chose Spain because of its experience in organising these kinds of international events and the understanding of the Spanish media and public with regard to everything related to organ donation and transplantation". In total, the EC has invited journalists from all 27 EU countries.
The aim of the meeting is to inform the European public of the work the Commission has been doing over recent years in the field of substances of human origin (organs, tissues, cells, blood and blood derivative products) through projects financed or co-financed by the European Union.
This event is being held after Germany asked Spain for help in reorganising its organ donation and transplant system following some instances of irregularities in some German hospitals. Rafael Matesanz, director of the ONT, said: "They can't change their system overnight, but they can adapt many of the concepts developed in Spain. It is very significant that Germany, which has always taken a route quite independent of other countries in the field of transplantation, should call on Spain to identify its problems, because this is an area in which other countries look to us".
