The European Union has announced new regulations on packaging and packaging waste, to support its transition toward a circular economy.
- (1888PressRelease) February 08, 2025 - Geneva (February 7, 2024) – SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 019.25 to summarize the European Union’s (EU) new rules for packaging and packaging waste.
(EU) 2025/40, the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), published on January 22, 2025, comes into force on February 11, 2025, when it will replace Directive 94/62/EC.
The Regulation is aimed at harmonizing national measures for traders while protecting the environment and human health. It includes provisions to reduce excessive packaging, improve recyclability and increase recycled content. The phaseout of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), many of which have been found to cause health concerns, is also addressed.
SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 019.25 includes information about the definitions of PFAS in the PPWR as well as two helpful tables listing the highlights, scope and requirements of the regulation.
Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 019.25 for more details.
