EU Plans Restriction on BPA in Thermal Papers
The EU has proposed a restriction on BPA in thermal papers. It is expected that this regulation will come into effect in mid-2019.
- (1888PressRelease) July 21, 2016 - The World Trade Organization (WTO) has circulated a notification from the European Union (EU) regarding its intention to restrict bisphenol A (BPA).
The draft regulation, attached to WTO document 16-2246, was published on April 21, 2016, and will create a new entry under Annex XVII of REACH. It is expected that the proposal will be adopted in the second half of 2016, with a planned effective date in mid-2019.
BPA acts as a print developer in thermal papers - for example, thermal receipt papers. The proposal will restrict the use of BPA to less than 0.02% in thermal papers.
In addition, the European Agency's Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) has recognized that bisphenol S (BPS) may have a similar toxicological profile to BPA. The RAC has indicated its intention to monitor substance evaluation decisions on BPS and, if necessary, will restrict BPS under REACH.
REACH places responsibility on industry to manage the risks that chemicals, or consumer articles, may pose to public health and to the environment. Companies are therefore advised to seek specialist assistance in making sure they comply with all REACH regulations. SGS offers a one-stop solution for companies ensuring their production and distribution systems remain compliant with REACH legislation.
