EU Issues New Version of EN 648 for Fluorescent Whitened Paper and Board in Food Contact Materials

CEN issues revised version of EN 648 - ‘Paper and board intended to come into contact with foodstuffs – Determination of the fastness of fluorescent whitened paper and board.’ End Quote

(1888PressRelease) March 21, 2019 - The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) has published a revised version of EN 648 to determine the fastness of fluorescent whitened paper and board intended to come into contact with food.

Published in November 2018, EN 648:2018 supersedes the 2006 iteration of the standard. It includes several changes, of which stakeholders should be aware. These include:
• Revising and extending the scope of food contact paper. Now covers:
o Testing of food contact fluorescent whitened paper and board
o Use of four procedures (A to D), previously two. These are for:
A. Long Duration Contacts: (23 ± 2) C for 24 hours
B. Medium Duration contacts: (23 ± 2) C for 4 hours
C. Short duration contacts: (23 ± 2) C for 10 minutes
D. Hot Contacts:
• Fatty food - (120 ± 3) C for 0.5 hours in oil
• Moist food - (90 ± 3) C for 0.5 hours in water
• Provides procedure for large samples (Annex A)
• New definition for (unstained) glass fiber paper – includes a pH-value of 9.0 to 9.5 (ISO 6588-2) as one of the conditions
• Replacing ‘saliva simulant’ with ‘alkaline salt solution’ as simulant

The new standard requires Member States to withdraw conflicting standards by May 2019. Stakeholders are advised to now check their products against the latest version of EN 648.
