EU Issues New Finger Paint Safety Standard
The European Union has published a new version of its toy safety standard for finger paints.
- (1888PressRelease) June 12, 2020 - The new standard is the third amendment to EN 71-7:2014. It was published as EN 71-7:2014+A3:2020 in April 2020 by the European Committee for Standardization (Comité Européen de Normalisation, CEN) and contains several important changes.
These include:
• References to ‘Directive 2008/1228/EC’ in Tables A.1 and A.2 are replaced with Regulation 231/2012. The former piece of legislation has been repealed
• Maximum concentration of climbazole (item 22) is strengthened – 0.5% to 0.2% (Commission Communication 2018/C 282/02)
• Limit of quantitation (LOQ) for benzo[a]pyrene becomes less stringent – from 0.02 mg/kg to 0.05 mg/kg (Annex 6, F.6)
• (Some) editorial changes on the word ‘benzo[]pyrene’ to ‘benzo[a]pyrene’
The new standard is now available from national standards agencies. It will be given the status of a national standard by October 2020 and conflicting national standards should be withdrawn by this date.
EN 71-7:2014+A3:2020 is also expected to be harmonized under Directive 2009/48/EC, the so-called Toy Safety Directive (TSD). This will happen when it is officially accepted by the European Commission (EC) and is published in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU).
