EU Introduces Stricter Migration Limits for Chromium (VI) in Some Toy Materials
The EU has issued Directive (EU) 2018/725, amending the TSD migration limits for chromium (VI) in certain toy materials. The new rules become effective in November 2019.
- (1888PressRelease) June 02, 2018 - The European Union (EU) has issued a new directive covering the migration limit for chromium (VI) in certain categories of toy material.
Published on May 17, 2018, as Directive (EU) 2018/725, the legislation retains the existing migration limits for Category I and II toy materials but strengthens the limit for Category III – scraped-off toys – by approximately four-fold. Examples of Category III toy materials include:
• Ceramics, glass, metals and metal alloys, textiles and wood
• Elastomers, leatherettes, polymers and surface coating materials
• Other materials such as bones, leather and natural sponges
The new regulations impose a migration limit of 0.053 mg/kg for chromium (VI), down from 0.2 mg/kg. The limits remain at 0.02 mg/kg for Category I toys and 0.005 mg/kg for Category II.
Stakeholders were first informed of the EU’s intentions in September 2017. The new regulations will amend Annex II of Directive 2009/48/EC, known as the European Toy Safety Directive. Member states will have until November 17, 2019 to adopt Directive (EU) 2018/725 into their national law, and the law will become effective on November 18, 2019.
