EU Commissioner Gunther H. Oettinger visits Power Plus Communications in Mannheim
Power Plus Communications (PPC) welcomed EU Commissioner for Energy Günther H. Oettinger, to host an informal discussion on the theme of 'The digitalisation of the energy network' followed by an open house introduction to PPC's broadband powerline solutions. The breakfast meeting was also attended by senior representatives of German utilities as well as Mannheim's Mayor Dr. Peter Kurz.
- (1888PressRelease) July 08, 2014 - Günther H. Oettinger, Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for Energy, visited Power Plus Communications AG (PPC) on 1 July. His particular interest was the Mannheim based company's innovative broadband powerline communications system, which forms the basis of Smart Grids and Smart Metering.
Mr. Oettinger, together with Mannheim's Mayor Peter Kurz and leading experts from the energy sector formed a small group to discuss in detail the possibilities for a smart grid and its importance to the energy transition. All participants were convinced that smart grids can make a significant contribution to the success of the energy transition and that information and communication technologies in particular will play a central role in the future energy supply.
"With the Smart Metering roll-out the Commission wants to make energy supply smarter and more flexible" explained EU Commissioner Oettinger. "It is important that innovative SMEs take the chance to benefit from the opportunities that present themselves in this context. However, data privacy and data security must be guaranteed. The development of the BSI protection profile for the introduction of smart metering in Germany is a very good example for this."
Mr. Kurz, Mayor of Mannheim, was impressed by the innovation and growth of the SME: "PPC has created many new jobs here in Mannheim and together with MVV Energie the "Smart City Mannheim (MoMa)" project has created a reference for smart grids which is recognized worldwide."
PPC's CEO Ingo Schönberg is convinced: "Power supply is on the verge of the fourth revolution - Energy 4.0. The networking of energy supply ensures the safe integration of renewable energy and is the basis for many new business models."
Company Information
Power Plus Communications AG Mannheim is a leading provider of Broadband Powerline communications systems (BPL) for Smart Metering and Smart Grids. Both Managing Directors Ingo Schönberg (CEO) and Eugen Mayer (COO) have led the company since its foundation in 2001. PPC's shareholders include Climate Change Capital Private Equity, Siemens Financial Services and British Gas as well as management team and key employees.
PPC's Broadband Powerline Technology (BPL) provides utilities amongst others a powerful solution for smart metering as well as for all smart grid applications such as distribution grid automation or remote controllable transformers. The open, standards based BPL communications technology uses the existing electricity grid. Actual consumption data from an electronic meter is transferred over the grid to the utility via a Gateway located in the house. This is done in real-time, encrypted and via Internet protocol. As a pioneer of BPL technology, PPC has outstanding experience and expertise and has already developed BPL networks on electricity grids supplying more than 1,000,000 people. Customers of PPC are leading European distribution network operators such as E.ON, RWE, Western Power Distribution, EnBW and many smaller utilities. PPC is a partner in multiple Smart Grid projects such as E-Energy (Germany), DG Demogrid (Austria) and the "Low Carbon Network Fund" (Great Britain) PPC has also received numerous awards for its innovative products and solutions, including for example, the "Potential Innovation" award from the German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) as one of the ten most innovative companies in Germany, as a "Landmark" by the initiative "Germany, Land of Ideas" and "The Guardian Global Cleantech 100".
