EU Adds Standard for Nickel in Spectacle Frames and Sunglasses in Harmonized Method List Under REACH
The EU has harmonized EN 16128:2015, a standard relating to spectacle frames and sunglasses, to its list of methods for demonstrating presumption of conformity with nickel under REACH.
- (1888PressRelease) February 10, 2017 - The European Commission has published Commission Communication 2017/C 011/02, which harmonizes a third method for demonstrating presumption of conformity with nickel. Published on January 13, 2017 in the Official Journal of the European Union (EU) the additional method is a standard for ophthalmic optics and comes under entry 27 to Annex XVII of REACH.
Previously, only two methods - EN 1811:2011+A1:2015 and EN 12472:2005+A1:2009 - were harmonized to demonstrate presumption of conformity with nickel. The addition of EN 16128:2015 follows a number of changes to the previous 2011 version of the standard.
The three harmonized methods are:
• EN 1811:2011+A1:2015 'Reference test method for release of nickel from all post assemblies which are inserted into pierced parts of the human body and articles intended to come into direct and prolonged contact with the skin'
• EN 12472:2005+A1:2009 'Method for the simulation of wear and corrosion for the detection of nickel release from coated items'
• EN 16128:2015 'Ophthalmic optics - 'Reference method for the testing of spectacle frames and sunglasses for nickel release'. The scope of this standard applies to spectacle frames, ready-to-wear spectacles, sunglasses and other items for eye and face protection
The communication does not list an effective date for EN 16128:2015, so it is presumed it is effective with immediate effect.
