Environmental Justice Advocate Majora Carter to Speak at Adelphi University on October 6, 2010

- Nassau-Suffolk, NY (1888PressRelease) October 01, 2010 - Adelphi University is pleased to welcome Majora Carter, who will speak on "The Death of Philanthropy - Why Real Change Can't Come from Charity." The event will take place on Wednesday, October 6, 2010, at 7:00 p.m. in the Ruth S. Harley University Center's Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballroom, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. It is sponsored by the William E. Simon Lecture in American Civilizations and Values. The event is free and open to the public.
Majora Carter simultaneously addresses public health, poverty alleviation, and climate change adaptation as one of the nation's pioneers in successful urban green-collar job training and placement systems. She founded Sustainable South Bronx in 2001 to achieve environmental equality through economically sustainable projects informed by community needs. Her work now includes advising cities, foundations, universities, businesses, and communities around the world on unlocking their local economic potential to benefit everyone as president of the consulting firm Majora Carter Group, LLC.
She has been instrumental in creating riverfront parks, building green roofs, working to remove poorly planned highways in favor of positive economic development, and successfully implementing the Bronx Environmental Stewardship Training (BEST) program-seeding a community with a skilled workforce that has both a personal and economic stake in their urban environment.
She has earned numerous honors including One of The 100 Most Creative in Business by Fast Company Magazine, a MacArthur "genius" Fellowship, Essence Magazine's 25 Most Influential African-Americans, New York Post's Liberty Medal for Lifetime Achievment, and named "The Green Power Broker" by the New York Times and "The Prophet of Local" by Ashoka Foundation's ChangeMakers.org. She is a board member of the Wilderness Society and CERES; and hosts the public radio series "The Promised Land."
