  • (1888PressRelease) June 02, 2017 - Since the placing of the first plaque at City Hall in August of 2014, the list of Blue Plaque sites around Yangon has grown to currently number 18 in total. The newest addition came earlier this month in the form of the neoclassical style Yangon Stock Exchange, built in 1939 and which was formerly the Union Bank of Burma.

Also becoming Blue Plaque sites so far in 2017 were the prestigious BEHS (6) Botahtaung, formerly known as St. Paul's High School and as one of Yangon's oldest schools was once part of the mission compound that encompassed the country's biggest Roman Catholic cathedral, and Bogyoke Aung San Market which since its opening in 1926 has been a place to shop for clothes, art supplies and souvenirs and also a place to hang out in the evening.

Other Blue Plaque sites include The Armenian Church, Central Fire Station, General Post Office, Maha Bandoola Park, Indian Embassy, Musmeah Yeshua Synagogue and YWCA Building. A full list of the sites can be viewed at www.yangonheritagetrust.org/blue-plaque-project

With the Blue Plaque project, the Yangon Heritage Trust aims to draw attention to both the known and the forgotten histories of Yangon by recognizing key historic buildings and renowned residents that have contributed to the narrative of the city. Plaque signage is in Burmese and English.

    Impressive Colonial Architecture
Along with pagodas, temples, churches and mosques, Yangon's diverse urban cityscape also features some of the most impressive colonial architecture found anywhere in Southeast Asia, including what was once described as "the finest hostelry East of Suez" and which is today among the best-loved luxury colonial hotels in Asia.

Built in 1901, The Strand Yangon boasts a history that spans well over a century and was a gathering place for adventurers, explorers and raconteurs - among these Rudyard Kipling, Somerset Maugham, George Orwell, Orson Welles and Sir Noel Coward.

A leader among five star hotels in Yangon and indeed among luxury hotels in Myanmar, The Strand Yangon in 2016 underwent a major restoration project that ushered it into the 21st Century. This included upgrades to air-conditioning and in-room technologies for its 31 suites, a remodeling of the famous hotel bar and extensive staff training focusing on the renowned Strand level of service, while maintaining original architectural details and features of the property such as the beloved period furnishings, chandeliers and ceiling fans.
