  • (1888PressRelease) January 02, 2015 - Kickstarter, a book, and math--all at the same time? Yes! Lucy Ravitch, owner of Enjoy Learning Something, just launched a Kickstarter with her novelty book The Pancake Menu: What will you order? This revolutionary book has kids engage in math as they pretend to order from twelve creative pancakes. Readers are encouraged to print 'menu money' and ordering sheets from the associated website, kidsmenubooks.com. Then they can play with the book to its full potential.

Kids, parents, and teachers alike are sure to be delighted with the open exploration of hands-on math skills practiced while enjoying The Pancake Menu and playing with 'menu money'. The unique layout of the book is part of its charm. It appears to be a menu as you turn the pages, but several pages fold out to show the recipes with real photos. Each recipe contains an ingredient list, supply list, step-by-step instructions and a handy QR code to take you to the video tutorial.

With talk of Common Core buzzing around the US, we are in need of supplements for real-world experiences to deepen our children's math understanding. The Pancake Menu and other Kids Menu Books are coming out at the perfect time. Lucy says, "Teachers and parents can use the book to not only support addition and subtraction skills, but division, multiplication, fractions, and data collection/graphing as well!" While The Pancake Menu is geared toward seven to ten year old children, Lucy has seen younger children love playing with it too.

Lucy admits, "Kids Menu Books are books I would have loved to have as a kid. I wasn't a big reader, but I enjoyed reading cookbooks and math was my favorite subject. I think tons of kids that will have a blast with my books, even in this digital age." She also says, "Kids that don't usually like math are having fun with mock versions of the book too! I'm pleased that both boys and girls are thrilled with the mock version. Children have told me they love playing with money and they can't wait to make the pancakes after they play."

Since Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing crowdfunding source, Lucy needs to raise her minimum $20,000 goal during one month, January 2015. Lucy is ambitious and has laid out plans for the campaign with stretch goals reaching far beyond the minimum. If the campaign can raise $500,000 or more, there are several bonuses each backer will receive, including an app made for the book so it can be more interactive.

Will Kickstarter help Kids Menu Books be the next big book brand? With all Kids Menu Books has to offer--part educational toy, part cookbook, and being the first novelty book of its kind, it is a good candidate Apparently, Lucy knew something about pancakes we haven't thought of before--they really can help kids with math!
