EN 71 Parts 18 and 19 for Toy Safety issued by CEN

Two new CEN standards have been released for phenol and bisphenol A (BPA) in certain toys.
- (1888PressRelease) February 22, 2025 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 025.25, reporting on the European Committee for Standardization’s (CEN) two new standards for phenol and bisphenol A (BPA) in certain toys.
Phenol in high concentrations can cause burns and other respiratory and health issues and is commonly used in the production of plastics, disinfectants and pharmaceuticals. BPA, a chemical commonly found in plastics, has been linked with a variety of health problems, including infertility issues, obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer.
In December 2024, two new test standard methods were published by the CEN for the determination of phenol and BPA in certain toy materials:
• EN 71-18:2024 ‘Phenol in aqueous (content) and polymeric (migration) toy materials’
• EN 71-19:2024 ‘Migration of bisphenol A from toy materials’
These two methods are now part of the EN 71 series of standards on toy safety, which includes EN 71 Parts 1-5, 7, 8 and 10-20. These European standards are to be given the status of a national standard by June 2025.
SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 025.25 includes a helpful table with highlights of the two new standards.
Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 025.25 for more details.
