  • Detroit, MI (1888PressRelease) January 21, 2012 - Empowered Flower Girl (EFG) CEO and long-time mentor Rasheda Kamaria announces the second-annual "MenTEEs: T-Shirts for a Cause" campaign in observance of National Mentoring Month in January.

The company, which produces workshops and clothing that inspire girls and young women to live powerfully, will donate 25% of all t-shirt sales (and include a matching donation) through Feb. 15, 2012, to a non-profit youth or mentoring organization. Detroit-area mentoring partners for 2012 include Sisters Who Are Powerful (S.W.A.P.), Innovative Me, Uniting Neighborhoods and Inspiring Today's Youth (U.N.I.T.Y.), Mentoring Youth Network and the Young Entrepreneurs Series (Y.E.S.).

"Our goal is to bring awareness to the need for mentors for young people as well as educate youth on the benefits of having a positive role model," said Kamaria, who has mentored girls for nearly 11 years through Alternatives for Girls in Detroit. "Everyone can use an encouraging life coach every now and then. Mentors are a great resource for people of all ages."

Tips for teens - Find your perfect mentor match
There are numerous ways teens can go about finding their ideal mentor, coach or role model. Kamaria recommends the following:

    • Mentors can be chosen based on your interests, aspirations or needs. From business mentors for aspiring entrepreneurs to mentors who work with children of incarcerated parents, there are many options.
    • Simply ask someone you admire or contact an organization that offers a formal mentoring program. The key is to do your homework. Additional mentoring resources can be found at www.mentoring.org.

Janelle Edwards, a recruitment coordinator for Mentoring USA, said teens who are mentored have access to a positive role model who is invested in their success.

"Mentors provide their mentees with coaching and guidance that will increase their self-esteem and encourage positive outcomes," she said. "There are many unsung heroes and heroines all around."
