Emerald Crystal Chosen to Design and Handcraft St. Patrick's Day Crystal Bowl
Emerald Crystal has been chosen to design and handcraft the special commisioned bowl for St. Patrick's Day ceremony in the White House. The shamrock was proudly presented to President Obama by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny at the ceremony.
- (1888PressRelease) March 18, 2014 - First gifted to President Truman in 1952, the tradition of bringing Irish shamrock to the White House has become part of the annual celebrations for Saint Patrick's Day. The offering is a symbol of friendship between Ireland and the United States.
In 2014 the shamrock was presented to President Obama by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny at a ceremony in the White House. The honour went to Emerald to design and handcraft the specially commissioned bowl for the occasion.
The magnificent piece was designed by Martin Croke and crafted by Emerald Master Artisan Walter Walsh. The inspiration for the design is the holy mountain Croagh Patrick, the site where Saint Patrick fasted for forty days in 441 AD.
The tradition of pilgrimage to the iconic summit is carried on to this day and the bowl beautifully captures the long winding path laid out before the devoted traveller.
Splayed rosette cuts provide a base from which a delicate pattern of cut shamrocks make their way back to the top of the bowl - a fitting motif for the event. One panel of the bowl is reserved for the inscription from the people of Ireland to mark the special occasion.
