  • (1888PressRelease) October 08, 2011 - For the third year in a row, Embrace, a nonprofit organization that mobilizes college students to address San Diego community needs, will team up with elected officials, student volunteers and community members to host its 3rd Annual "Embrace the Streets" event for San Diego's homeless.

On Saturday, November 12th from Noon to 2 p.m., hundreds of homeless civilians and veterans living on the streets of downtown, or in temporary housing, will receive blankets, clothing and prepared food from local volunteers.

Last year's event collected and donated more than 1000 lbs. in clothing and bedding, in addition to handing out over 500 hot meals to those who attended. All left over food will be donated to the Veteran's Village of San Diego.

The "Embrace the Streets" effort will begin with a week-long clothing, blanket and sheets drive, with donation sites at San Diego State University (SDSU) and San Diego City College (SDCC) from Monday, October 31st through Friday, November 4th.

As the main food sponsor for this year's event, The San Diego Food Bank will donate all of the meat for the event, to then be prepared by local restaurant/catering chefs.

All part of Embrace's ongoing CommYOUnity Chefs Program, chefs from Sushi On A Roll, Epic Catering, Epicure, Yokoz and Indulge will prepare all of the food throughout the two hour event.

San Diego City Councilmember Todd Gloria will be presenting Embrace with a Resolution and will join California Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher to work with the students, distributing clothing and food to all who attend.

The 2010 effort warranted a City Council Resolution, from Councilman Carl Demaio; a California Legislature Assembly Resolution, from Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher; and a Proclamation from the City of San Diego, from Mayor Jerry Sanders.

College student volunteers will give out all the clothing and blankets, accumulated from the drive, on the corner of both 15th & Island and 16th & Island from Noon to 2:00 p.m.

Heavily involved participants in this year's event include: Sempra Energy Foundation, as the main sponsor; the San Diego Police Department and Assistant Chief Shelley Zimmerman; SDSU, and SDCC.
