  • (1888PressRelease) October 29, 2010 - Internet entrepreneur turned philanthropist Jesse Willms has entered into a long-term partnership with the Bissell Centre in order to help them fight poverty and homelessness in Edmonton.

"The Bissell Centre is known as one of the most effective long term charitable organizations in Edmonton," Willms said. "For me, it makes sense to give them my financial support and help them help our neighbors live better, more fulfilling lives."

Willms plans to continue to give $10,000 a month to the Bissell Centre with most of the money targeted toward the Robert Tegler Friendship Employment Services program.

"Jobs and employment skills are the two most effective things you can provide people if you want them to get out of poverty," Willms said. "The Bissell Centre has understood that for a century." Jesse was extremely happy to learn that the centre has given away over $200 000 in safety tickets and first aid training for their participants so they can find construction jobs.

The Bissell Centre was founded 100 years ago in Edmonton on the premise that neighbors should help their neighbors. At first, the Bissell Centre worked with members of the Ukrainian immigrant community. Today, it provides services for any Edmonton resident facing unemployment, homelessness or poverty. The organization works to find places to live for homeless people, with the launch of their new program, Homes (homeless) to Homes. The Bissell Centre also provides a place where they can shower, do their laundry, have access to a clean toilet and read books and watch movies. Their employment center matches companies who need day laborers with people who are willing to work. It also offers basic job skills classes so they can find permanent jobs. A special service is provided for young mothers who have never entered the workforce before and do not know how to access the jobs that are available to them. New moms are also supported with counseling services on motherhood, and are given packages of diapers and formula.

"Breaking the cycle of unemployment is the best way to break the cycle of poverty," Willms said. "When you provide people with a way to find jobs, you give them a reason to get up in the morning. You give them pride. You provide them with hope. You let them know they can have a better future."

Willms is a prominent member of the Edmonton community. He started his first business when he was 16 years old, buying and selling computers and software from his basement. Six years later he had turned that into a multimillion-dollar company with more than 250 employees.

Earlier this year he was inspired by the words of Warren Buffett and Bill Gates who challenged successful entrepreneurs to give back to the community. Since then, he has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to breast cancer research, the Kiva Foundation, World Vision, Santas Anonymous and other groups.

"It feels good to give back to the community," Willms said.
