  • (1888PressRelease) July 30, 2016 - Editage, a leader in English-language editing, translation, publication support, and education services launched a global campaign to promote and improve authors' and researchers' understanding of ethical publication practices. As part of the campaign, Editage is issuing a call to researchers the world over to pledge their commitment to ethical publication practices. The idea for the campaign took shape following the recent increase in the frequency and gravity of ethics-based retractions by journals. Editage has have also created a powerful video to educate and warn researchers about unethical publication practices and agents (predatory journals and author services, for example) that take advantage of their need to get published.

Researchers are encouraged to visit the campaign page, view the video, and pledge to uphold ethical publication practices. Editage is also extending additional support to those researchers who pledge by giving them a free e-book on publication ethics. Researchers are also encouraged to spread the word and invite their peers/colleagues to join the campaign.

According to Clarinda Cerejo, Editor-in-Chief, of Editage Insights, a comprehensive knowledge portal for authors and publication professionals, "Publication ethics seems to be becoming a critical aspect of academic publishing, with all the recent cases of retraction due to misconduct. The publish or perish culture definitely has a large role to play in this situation, leading many authors to try to take the easy way out to get published faster. We hope that many researchers globally will watch our video and pledge their commitment to publication ethics. This will only increase their own sense of responsibility and serve as a guiding light even in those tough situations when they are struggling to get published."

Even though industry guidelines and codes of conduct exist (e.g., those instituted by the Committee on Publication Ethics or COPE), practices such as author scooping, author scamming, data falsification, bogus authorship, peer review rigging, etc., are still prevalent among authors across the globe. Given the increased corruption and violation of integrity in research publication, Editage seeks to positively influence and motivate researchers by asking them to commit to following ethical publication practices. The idea is to bring about a change not through policing or penalizing authors but by educating, influencing, and encouraging them to choose the right path, no matter what.
