ECHA Opens Consultation Over Listing New SVHC

(1888PressRelease) March 23, 2022 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, is reminding stakeholders that the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has launched a consultation about listing N-(hydroxymethyl)acrylamide as a substance of very high concern (SVHC).

N-(hydroxymethyl)acrylamide has a number of potential applications:
• Fluoroakly acrylate copolymer
• Monomer for polymerization
• Paints and coatings

It is structurally similar to acrylamide and is currently on the Union list of authorized monomers and other starting substances or macromolecules obtained from microbial fermentation, additives and polymer production aids. It has a specific migration limit (SML) of 0.01 mg/kg (Not Detected, ND) under Regulation (EU) 10/2011 ‘Food Contact Plastics’.

The 45-day consultation has been launched over the classification of N-(hydroxymethyl)acrylamide has both Carcinogenic 1B and Mutagenic 1B.

The ECHA announced the consultation on March 4 and is accepting comments until April 19, 2022.
