Earth Day 2011: A Billion Acts of Green(R)
Earth Day is a day that unites people in a variety of actions for a healthier life and environment.
- (1888PressRelease) April 14, 2011 - April 22nd, Earth Day 2011, is a day that unites people planet wide in a variety of actions for a healthier environment. The theme for this year's celebration is A Billion Acts of Green® - the largest environmental service campaign in the world. It enlists commitments small and large from individuals to governments and corporations to quantify their acts of green through an easy-to-use online registration tool at the Earth Day Network. The goal is to register one billion commitments in advance of the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 2012. You may register your act of green by visiting Act.earthday.org.
Your green office
Your business or home office is a great place to make a solid commitment for Earth Day. We did some research with some help from our friends at Green America (and with deference to David Letterman) and we came up with a list of the 10 Most Best Things you can do to green your office:
10. Get certified! - A free Green Office Certification® is available at http://goo.gl/ugHIO. Just take the on-line questionnaire and you will receive an electronic graphic for your website and a free decal for your window or door.
9. Get off the junk mail lists - Help let the trees breathe easier and uncomplicate your life by getting off the junk mail lists.
8. Encourage the use of green transportation - Offer incentives to encourage employees to take public transportation, walk, bike, or car pool.
7. Switch to compact fluorescent or LED lighting - While the initial investment may cost more, you will save money in the long run and use less energy. Find CFLs at http://goo.gl/K0IZM.
6. Recycle everything possible! - If your building does not already offer recycling, look for an independent recycling firm or take recyclables to a recycling center.
5. Ditch the foam cups!! - Polystyrene products are an environmental hazard throughout their entire life cycle. Instead purchase compostable cups, plates and forks or better yet buy re-usable tableware for the office.
4. Introduce fair trade certified coffee & tea to your workplace - Green America is encouraging workplaces all across the country to become Fair Trade Workplaces. Fair trade products insure economic security to earth-respecting, organic farmers worldwide.
3. Use remanufactured toner cartridges - This is another money saving idea that keeps nasty plastics and metals from the waste stream and gives toner cores extended life-cycle use.
2. Switch your office to 100% recycled paper - Paper accounts for roughly 40% of all municipal waste. Recycled paper saves energy, water, landfill space and most importantly, carbon-absorbing forests.
1. Join a green energy partnership - You can offset your offices' carbon footprint with a renewable energy company such as Native Energy, Green Mountain Energy, Community Energy, etc. If unavailable, contact CarbonFund.org and they will offset your footprint through membership.
Happy Earth Day 2011!
