ABOUT FATHER GREG BOYLE (a.k.a. "Father G") and Father G and the Homeboys Documentary Narrated by Martin Sheen:
Fr. Greg Boyle came to Boyle Heights during the 1980's when gang violence was at a record high. He realized that he had to work directly with gang members to help improve their own lives. He did so by creating Jobs for a Future which provided employment opportunities, counseling, and other various services. Father G then took it to another level by founding Homeboy Industries in 1992 to create businesses that provide instruction, work experience and the chance for enemy gang members to work side by side. Currently, Homeboy Industries manages several companies that include a café, bakery, and landscaping/maintenance service company. They also offer tattoo removal services, free of charge. Boyle continually stresses that Homeboy Industries does not help those in need: they help those who want help, quoting Father G "Nothing stops a bullet like a job". The DVD demonstrates and inspires how to stay hopeful in spite of failure and how to meet the world with a loving heart.
Fr. Greg Boyle and the story of Homeboy Industries have been celebrated at the White House and attracted feature attention from NPR, the LA Times, ABC Los Angeles, Latino LA, Variety, Witness LA, Catholic Review, LAstheplace.com, and the LA Weekly, among many others. The documentary Father G and the Homeboys has been widely received in film festivals all around! It was at the Opening Night Film-Arizona Int'l Film Festival 2008, Official Selection at Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival 2007, Winner of Best Documentary-Cine Sin Fin Film Festival 2007, Winner of the Audience Award-Dances with Films 2007, and Winner of the Grand Jury Award-Buffalo/Niagara Film Festival 2007.
Fr. G is truly an inspiring leader and his stories of the lives he's influenced are ones to be heard. Homeboy Industries along with MDI Distribution want to expand their reach by showing the film not only in correctional centers and juvenile halls, but also to colleges, libraries high schools as well as The Boys and Girls Club of America. A curriculum guide with common core standards is available for educators. Homeboy industries will have a booth set up at the DVD Launch to help their cause.
