Duke Energy Carolinas Launches Refrigerator Recycling Program in the Carolinas
Duke Energy Carolinas has launched a new program to give customers across the Carolinas a convenient way to recycle outdated refrigerators and freezers.

“The program is simple, easy and effective,” said John Langston, Duke Energy’s program manager. “We are focused on helping customers abandon as many of these energy-wasting appliances as we can. It will save our customers money, reduce energy demand and help preserve our country’s natural resources.”
The technology inside older refrigerators and freezers is often so outdated it requires three times more electricity to operate compared to newer models. Unplugging these dinosaurs can save up to $150 annually on a customer’s energy bill.
The old refrigerators and freezers will be recycled in a new recycling plant in Charlotte, N.C. Operated by JACO, the process creates 16 new green jobs and returns 95 percent of the refrigerator and freezer components back to the manufacturing stream.
Call Duke Energy at 855-398-6200 or visit duke-energy.com/recycle to schedule a time for JACO to pick up the old refrigerators and freezers. The appliances must be in working condition and between 10 and 30 cubic feet in size. An incentive check for $30 will arrive within three to four weeks.
The Charlotte plant converts old, inefficient appliances into recyclable materials, and safely extracts and neutralizes toxic substances. This includes mercury in thermostats, along with oils and foam insulation that can emit ozone-eating gases when exposed to air. Those substances poison the environment when refrigerators and freezers are recklessly discarded or disposed of in landfills.
