DUI Recipient Invents And Develops An Advanced Deterrent To Impaired Driving

  • (1888PressRelease) August 04, 2010 - Minneapolis MN - The revolutionary new means of detecting a driver's capability to safely operate an automobile works on an entirely different basis than conventional "breathalyzers." The SafeKey® is based upon the well-known fact that human reaction rates are compromised by alcohol and other drugs. Breath alcohol-detection devices attempt to determine Blood Alcohol Concentration by reacting to breath alcohol. Not only are these results often wrong, but even if they are correct, there is little correlation between a person's inability to drive safely and a given alcohol content - some people are tolerant and others are not.

In the U.S. some 16,500 persons are killed each year; while serious collateral injuries occur every two minutes and about 1,400,000 persons receive DUI's and billions of dollars are wasted. Globally, these losses are virtually incalculable.

Dr. Edwards, SafeKey Corporation's founder and inventor of the SafeKey said "My experience being stopped for DUI was the most humiliating, degrading, embarrassing and expensive experience I've ever undergone. This incident motivated me to devise a means that was permanent, affordable and effective in preventing DUI's."

Mr. Jim Rennie, the Company's VP for Marketing and Sales said "Our electronic product costs about a tenth of breathalyzer interlock devices and is permanently owned by the purchaser." Dr. Richard Galbraith, co-founder of SafeKey and the VP of Medical Affairs, emphasized "The SafeKey System not only detects the effects of alcohol, but any other source of impairment." Further, he stated "The SafeKey is a DUI/DWI preventative."

Dr. Galbraith added "It is well-known that Police Officers require 'probable cause' to stop a driver: weaving, missing stop lights, stop signs, etc. When a driver is pulled over, it is too late. The SafeKey offers an effective means to avoid such a condition." Mr. Rennie said "The SafeKey encourages drinkers to check their sobriety well before they might ordinarily continue drinking.

Briefly, the SafeKey system evaluates the only thing that is really important: eye-brain-hand response time. This system consists of two components: an Immobilizer, an electronic switch which controls electric power to the engine starter, which, in turn, is controlled by Check Module which assesses the user's neuro-motor response.

When the Check Module is activated, the user simply follows a random set of LED flashes; if the response is within a safe level, the car can be started. If not, after three failing tries, the vehicle cannot be started and cannot be tried again for about an hour.
