They follow a treatment model designed to assist young addicts through a set of five programs. Emotional Intelligence (EIQ) development activity is an integral part of one of these five programs.
The clinical program is a major element in Sober College's treatment model. The program includes several phases such as dual-diagnosis treatment, therapy, experiential therapy, emotional intelligence development, and equine. Sober College offers a number of experiential therapy options including surf, trapeze, and wind tunnel therapy. The purpose is to help students face unusual situations so that they can learn how to tackle different emotions such as fear, anxiety, and stress. During the first month of the EIQ program, participants need to go through an emotional intelligence assessment.
Different experiential therapies offered by Sober College aim to improve different emotional aptitudes in the participants. Trapeze therapy helps individuals take calculated risks and build trust in others. Wind tunnel and skydiving are about facing fears and handling stress and anxiety by taking part in flying activities. Equine therapy channels the use of horses as a means of learning about oneself. Surf therapy helps students to develop a better approach to learning. Talking about the experience of surf therapy, one of the participants said, "I learned about my approach to new situations and how fear can take over for me. For once, I really can't wait to come back and have therapy again."
Students receive guidance and training from Sober College's treatment team, consisting of psychiatrists, therapists, drug and alcohol counselors, academic director, staffs, and house managers.
