Drug-Free World Florida tackles April’s National Alcohol Awareness Month

According to research, young people who begin drinking before age 15 are four times more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those who begin drinking at age 21.
- Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL (1888PressRelease) March 28, 2025 - For April’s National Drug Awareness Month, the Foundation for a Drug-Free World Florida Chapter will highlight The Truth About Alcohol as staff and volunteers of the Foundation seek to raise awareness about alcohol abuse.
Per recovered.org, Alcohol Awareness month was established in 1987 with the goal of raising awareness about alcohol abuse and to provide resources to those afflicted with addiction.
“The Foundation for a Drug-Free World is all about education and prevention,” said Sonia Fabemoli, the Executive Director for the Foundation. “We want young people to know exactly what alcohol can do to a person, mentally and physically so when they are being offered a drink, they think twice about accepting it.”
“According to the 2023 Florida Substance Abuse Study, 20% of middle-school students and 34% of high school students have consumed alcohol. Per the CDC, 12% of Florida high school students binge drink,” said Fabemoli. Before they reach maturity, the brain of a young person is still developing – alcohol consumption at that stage can impair development. If that wasn’t bad enough, kids who start drinking before the age of 15 are four times more likely to become alcoholics than those who start at the age of 21. This is why education is key.”
The Truth About Drugs Program is a comprehensive drug education program that includes a feature-length documentary, public service announcements and booklets covering 14 drugs of choice and general information about what drugs are and what they do.
During the month of April, Fabemoli will be focusing her educational efforts on the dangers of alcohol addiction.
“The Truth About Alcohol booklet is available from the Center at no charge to educators, civic leaders, volunteers, parents and teens,” said Fabemoli. “Visitors can also watch the Truth About Drugs Film and learn more about how to help steer people away from addiction.”
The center is located at 41 N. Fort Harrison Avenue and is open Monday through Friday from 10:00am to 1:00pm and 2:00pm to 7:00pm and on weekends from 2:00pm to 7:00pm. No appointment is needed. For more information, call 727-467-6962.
ABOUT DRUG FREE WORLD
The Foundation for a Drug-Free World is a nonprofit public benefit corporation that empowers youth and adults with factual information about drugs so they can make informed decisions and live drug-free. Through a worldwide network of volunteers, 50 million drug prevention booklets have been distributed, tens of thousands of drug awareness events have been held in some 180 countries and Truth About Drugs public service announcements have been aired on more than 500 television stations. These materials and activities have helped people around the world learn about the destructive side effects of drugs and thereby make the decision for themselves to not use them.
Scientology founder and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard wrote, “Research has demonstrated that the single most destructive element present in our current culture is drugs.” Mr. Hubbard’s research in this field brought unparalleled drug rehabilitation solutions to the world. This, in turn, galvanized the Church and Scientologists to initiate the Truth About Drugs, a secular program through which they have worked with like-minded organizations for more than two decades to empower the millions with the truth about drugs.
