Dr. Seo Hyo-seok, who has been taking the initiative to globalize Korean medicine, gave a special lecture on the health of lungs in his capacity as a sponsor for the World Conference of Science Journalists in the afternoon of the 11th.
The lecture by Dr. Seo Hyo-seok, given to science journalists from all corners of the world, focused on 'Korean Medicine', that is, the excellence and originality of the 'traditional herbal medicine of Korea', and the importance of the role of the lung among all the bodily organs of human beings.
During the lecture, Dr. Seo Hyo-seok stated that, "the lung is the major and the skin the minor respiratory system of our body and, accordingly, rhinitis, asthma and atopic dermatitis are diseases with the same root." He asserted that, "even the allergic diseases can be treated easily by fortifying the health of the tonsils by relieving of the heat accumulated in the alveoli through cleaning of the lungs."
Dr. Seo made a statement on the importance of the heart and lung, "the foremost defense systems of the body, namely, lymphatic glands and tonsils, are situated in the neck to safeguard the entrance into the most important organs of the body, the heart and the lung," and disclosed that, "the fact that ribs and diaphragm are protecting the heart and the lung demonstrates the immensely important roles of the heart and the lung in our body."
He stated that, "there was no atopic dermatitis in Korea prior to the 1970's. When children scratch their skin due to itchinss, the adults would say 'it is an ailment that can be cured simply by walking on the earth' and majority was cured in such manner. However, the vicious cycle of using steroids is making treatment even more difficult these days. Steroid is a substance that has already been banned from the Olympics."
To the question, "why do people with very healthy lung such as marathon runners also suffer rhinitis and asthma?" Dr. Seo answered by stating that, "there are also quite a few rhinitis and asthma patients among the professional swimming athletes in Korea. 2 out of 3 of such patients will show improvement of about 15% within a short period of time when treated. What is important here is that the patient analyzes her/his own self improvements."
Dr. Seo Hyo-seok came to such a conclusion on the basis of his experiences in having treated a total of approximately 138,000 patients, including 15,000 with tonsillitis, 50,000 with rhinitis, 33,000 with asthma and 40,000 with atopic dermatitis during the past 42 years of his career.
Moreover, he executed a total of 11 health campaigns through the New York Times of the USA. Currently, herbal medicines of the Pyunkang Korean Medicine Hospital are being exported to various countries of the world, in order for the traditions of Korean medicine to be known widely.
He also emphasized that although different vaccines need to be developed whenever new viral diseases such as SARS, avian influenza, influenza A virus(H1N1) and MERS break out, a healthy tonsil is still important to our health, as it is a guardian that can defeat all viruses to rigorously safeguard the health of our bodies.
