This was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Thiru Ma Subramanian in the esteemed presence of Dr. Rajesh Kesavan, Founder Director, Dr RK Diabetic Foot and Podiatry Institute and other dignitaries. Later, Hon’ble Minister of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Thiru P K Sekar Babu visited Dr. RK Diabetic Foot and Podiatry Institute to see the unique initiatives.
Dr. RK’s is the first center in India to have an extremity MRI. This revolutionary technology scans the extremities (foot/leg or hand/arm) without entering a claustrophobic tunnel. One can finish scanning their limbs sitting comfortably reading a newspaper or sipping a cup of coffee. This machine provides high-quality images in a short time.
Commenting on the Extremity MRI Dr. Rajesh Kesavan, Founder, Dr. RK Diabetic Foot & Podiatry Institute said, “This Extremity MRI is also capable of generating dynamic images of the limbs helping to visualise the ligaments and joints in motion”.
Dr RK’s yet another initiative “Foot Care on Wheels”, a 24x7 Ambulance Service sponsored by Concord Biotech Limited. The main objective of this facility is to reach patients who have difficulty traveling as their mobility would be timid due to foot ulcers.
According to statistics about 422 million people worldwide have diabetes, 1.5 million deaths are directly attributed to Diabetes each year. Among these people with diabetes mellitus, 20% are at risk for foot ulceration as a result of neuropathy. Worldwide every 20 seconds a limb is lost due to diabetes. The saddest part is almost one–quarter of people die within 30 days of amputation, almost half at 1 year, and up to 80% in 5 years. These non-healing, smelly and chronic wounds affect their life by restricting their mobility and affecting their social life. The affected people become completely dependent on their family members for their normal routines thereby shattering their dreams, dignity and confidence.
The introduction of the Silicone Prosthesis department is yet another initiative by Dr. RK to ensure their patients don’t suffer any emotional trauma because of amputation. These prostheses are lookalikes of normal human parts and comfortably fits into the amputated part making it look exactly like their own feet or toe. It is a small initiative to restore the affected patients’ footprints and smile.
