Dr. Gurumurthy Kalyanaram, Asia Scholar and Consultant, Elected as President of MIT South Asian Alumni Association
Dr. Gurumurthy Kalyanaram, a well-recognized Asia scholar and consultant, has been elected as the President of South Asian Alumni Association of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
- (1888PressRelease) June 03, 2014 - Dr. Gurumurthy Kalyanaram, a well-recognized Asia Scholar and Consultant, has been elected as the President of South Asian Alumni Association of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). As alumni of the one of the top-10 leading universities in the world, MIT South Asian Alumni, numbering over 4,000, are contributing in significant ways to global economy, society and polity. Among the MIT South Asian alumni are Montek Ahluwalia, Policy leader in India, Adi Godrej, Chairman of Godrej Industries, Salman Khan, the visionary-founder of Khan Academy, RaghuramRajan, the current Reserve Bank of India Governor, and Bilal Zuberi, the Founder/CEO of Lux Capital.
Dr. Gurumurthy Kalyanaram (http://www.gurumurthykalyanaram.com/) was elected as the President of MIT South Asia Association by his fellow MIT alumni as a recognition of his deep academic scholarship and practical understanding of South Asia, and his energetic leadership. MIT South Asian Alumni Association, one of the major five affinity associations, is a vital part of the diverse MIT community and offers a platform to foster new ideasand forge new connections.
Dr. Gurumurthy Kalyanaram has taught and lectured in many universities including London School of Economics, NYIT (http://www.gurumurthykalyanaram.com/nyit.html), Tata Institute of Social Sciences, UT Dallas (http://www.gurumurthykalyanaram.com/ut-dallas.html) and Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars. He is a professor and academic leader, and a consultant. He has published over 100 papers, guided over 15 doctoral dissertations, served on editorial boards, and offered expert advice to the National Academy of Sciences and Ministry of Science and Technology.
As a scholar and a practitioner of public policy, Dr. Gurumurthy Kalyanaram lectures, writes and provides policy inputs on international commerce, economic, education, and trade matters. He also reports on the impact of law and regulations on society and economy, and follows the major lawsuits (http://www.gurumurthykalyanaram.com/public-policy-including-law-lawsuits.html) and their adjudications. In the recent past, he has written on various on US Supreme Court decisions including Law v. Siegel, 134 S.Ct. 1188 (2014) and Lawson v. FMR LLC, 134 S.Ct. 1158 (2014). Citing and discussing lawsuits filed by Bakke, Grutter and Graz, and Fisher, and the decisions on these cases, Dr. Gurumurthy Kalyanaram recently wrote an editorial on the consideration of diversity ("race") in admissions to U.S. colleges and universities in NMIMS Management Review.
Dr. Gurumurthy Kalyanaram is an advisor to many Colleges and Universities in Asia on academic matters, including curriculum development and design and accreditation. Currently, he is an advisor to International University of Japan. Earlier, he counseled with Amrita and NMIMS universities in India. His insights into growth and development of Asia, including China, Japan and India have been well received. He has been an invited keynote speaker in many important conferences, including the forthcoming conference on "Challenges of Development in the 21st Century: Asian Perspectives," in Japan. In this conference, he is joined by Ambassador Wasantha Karannagoda of Sri Lanka and Dr. Shinichi Kitaoka, Japan's former Ambassador to the UN and advisor to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
Dr. Gurumurthy Kalyanaram is an alumnus of MIT. He got his doctoral degree from MIT in Management Science and Industrial Organization Economics, and he has served on several important MIT committees including its Alumni Board, the Technology Day Committee, Enterprise Forum Board and the Institute's Visiting Committee. For his contributions to MIT, he has been awarded the prestigious Lob dell Award.
