Dr. Alan Carlson Awarded to "Best Doctors" in America 2011 - 2012
Alan N. Carlson, M.D. - Professor of Ophthalmology and Chief of the Corneal and Refractive Surgery Services at the Duke Eye Center, is honored as one of the top ophthalmologists in North Carolina with a place on the list of Best Doctors 2011 - 2012.
- (1888PressRelease) August 26, 2011 - With this award, Dr. Carlson, who specializes in laser vision correction surgery at the Duke Eye Center in Durham, North Carolina, has been recognized by his colleagues as one of the most accomplished ophthalmologists working in North Carolina and the U.S. This latest award marks the 15th year in a row that Dr. Carlson's contributions to the field have merited inclusion on this prestigious list.

This latest Best Doctors award builds on Dr. Carlson's sterling reputation for excellence in the field; in 2010 Dr. Carlson received the Golden Apple Teacher of the Year award as a full time faculty member of Duke University. He was also nominated for the Duke Medical Center Faculty Mentoring Award in the area of Clinical Research and received Teacher of the Year for 2011, awarded by the Technician training program at Duke.
As one of the most celebrated and experienced eye doctors at the Duke Eye Center - which currently enlists 68 dedicated faculty members, all committed to offering the safest eye procedures - Dr. Carlson pursues several avenues of research. These include a focus on laser vision correction surgery, cataract surgery, corneal transplantation, and the prevention of surgical complications following surgery. He is nationally and internationally recognized for his work aimed at the prevention and management of surgical complications.
In a recent podcast interview on www.dukehealth.org, Dr. Carlson stated: "We're extremely excited about our new programs for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, pediatric eye care, cataracts, and refractive surgery (at the Duke Eye Center)."
"Additionally, our thorough screening process and our desire to offer the safest procedure leads us to treat nearly half of our patients with newer, better, and even more advanced procedures than LASIK -- all of this is available at the Duke Center for Vision Correction," he added.
Dr. Carlson is considered a key thinker and visionary leader in the fields of LASIK eye surgery and cataract surgery, among others. He is credited with several important contributions in the areas of corneal endothelial transplantation (DSEK, DSAEK) and intraocular lens surgery, aimed at treating cataracts and presbyopia.
Dr. Carlson was also the recipient of the 1998 Academic Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and twice the recipient of the APPI Crystal Award in Japan for his clinical research in ophthalmic surgery.
