Quote If you come from a place of love, in any conversation, you're generally going to be OK, even if you disagree Quote
  • (1888PressRelease) June 30, 2016 - SAN DIEGO - Throughout this seemingly interminable political season, there have been no shortage of things to fight about. While the election is an important one, the gurus at Finding Woo remind us to discuss the issues instead of fighting with your friends about the candidates. Because when the election is over, you still want to have your friends.

With political messages coming at us from all sides, the women from Finding Woo teach us to choose our battles. These days, one cannot simply opt to ignore political talk around the literal water cooler, as the advent of social media has created a metaphorical water cooler that is as unavoidable as the posting of opinions. Instead of Facebook being a refuge where you go for a few minutes to unwind, it becomes the very place where you get most wound up…all because of something a friend posts. Beth Brennan and Geri Suster at Finding Woo are life adventurers whose goal is to help others get the best out of life. Sometimes, they say, it's better to just let it go. They warn that there is no point in arguing.

"You're not going to change anybody's mind," Brennan said.

Instead, you'll only wind up hurting the relationships you have over an argument that will have no real end. "The relationships you have are far more important than your opinions on the issues," Suster said.

They recommend that friends try to discuss the issues with dignity and informed arguments rather than just insulting the other candidate. This way, there is a greater chance to actually gain insight. Otherwise, all you are doing is telling the other person they are wrong. You'd want someone to see your point of view, instead of telling you that you're wrong, so extend others the same courtesy.

"If you come from a place of love, in any conversation, you're generally going to be OK, even if you disagree," Suster said.

Brennan agreed. "No political issue is worth losing a good relationship over."

While candidates are supposed to represent the best America has to offer, the intensity and stakes involved in modern political elections sometimes leads to an environment where cattiness, if not absolute viciousness begins to seem like the norm. This trickles down to you and the people in your life. Our discussions become fights, when we could be learning more about the issues. Instead of the candidates reflecting us, we are reflecting them.

"One of the problems with the discussion of politics is that we're not really talking about the issues most of the time," Suster said. "We go negative because the candidates go negative."

To learn why it is so important to face different opinions with dignity on Facebook and all other social interactions, watch the short video by Suster and Brennan here: http://www.findingwoo.com/finding-woo-in-relationships/living-woo-dont-get-trumped/
