  • Bergen-Passaic, NJ (1888PressRelease) December 06, 2013 - Don Bosco Prep is pleased to announce that three students have academically qualified among the 16,000 semifinalists in the 59th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. They are Eric R. Cole of Ringwood, N.J., Owen T. Lane of Montvale, N.J. and Philip J. Ozuah III of Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.

The high school seniors will compete next spring for approximately 8,000 National Merit Scholarships worth about $35 million. They number among 1.5 million students in more than 22,000 high schools who entered the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test (PSAT/NMSQT). The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. Approximately 15,000 of those who qualified are expected to advance to the finalist level and will be notified of this designation in February.

"Don Bosco Prep is dedicated to educating and empowering young men to pursue academic and personal excellence," said Principal John Stanczak. "We provide rigorous academics at the AP, honors and college prep levels, and the outstanding achievements of these students are a testament to their hard work and commitment to future success."

Ozuah and Jeffrey Asiedu of Nanuet, N.Y., both seniors at Don Bosco Prep, also have been named National Achievement Semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Program. The National Achievement Scholarship Program designates about 1,600 of the highest-scoring participants in states by region as semifinalists, and approximately 1,300 of them will be notified in late January that they have qualified as finalists.

In addition, nine Don Bosco Prep seniors have been selected as National Merit Commended Scholars in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. They are: Jeffrey Asiedu; Joseph C. Chung of Fort Lee, N.J.; Dylan P. Herina of Ringwood, N.J.; John T. O'Neill of Pompton Plains, N.J.; Joseph M. Pellicano of Park Ridge, N.J.; Patrick A. Piza of Bloomfield, N.J.; Kevin P. Quimbo of Woodcliff Lake, N.J.; Charles R. Rabolli of Mahwah, N.J.; and John T. Stabile of New City, N.Y.
