Announcing an important film about gambling addiction that will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.
New York, NY (1888PressRelease) March 12, 2013 - Director Jonathan VanBallenberghe's short documentary, Lapse: Confessions of a Slot Machine Junkie will have its world premiere at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival on April 19th.
When filmmaker Jonathan VanBallenberghe turned thirty-six, he realized that he had been addicted to gambling for a third of his life. He decided to end the problem once and for all. His approach to recovery was two-fold: enter into psychotherapy, and make a short documentary about the experience of overcoming his addiction.
Despite a dramatic growth in gambling addiction worldwide, few documentary films have taken on this subject. Lapse is unique in that all of the narration in the film is taken directly from VanBallenberghe's recordings of his psychotherapy sessions. The result is an extremely intimate and sensitive exploration of the mindset of a person in the grip of a suffocating gambling addiction. VanBallenberghe hopes the film will raise awareness of pathological and problem gambling in America, an addiction which affects an estimated five million people. Lapse will be his second film to premiere at Tribeca. His first, Guru, won a Special Jury Mention for Best Documentary Short in 2011.
