DNV KEMA Corporate Sustainability Roadmap Earns Scripps Networks Interactive Distinction As Tennessee "Green Achiever"
Greater Knoxville Business Journal recognizes media company's sustainability practices for outstanding community outreach.
- (1888PressRelease) August 03, 2012 - BURLINGTON, Mass. - DNV KEMA Energy & Sustainability, a leading global authority on energy consulting, testing, and certification, today announced that its corporate sustainability plan designed for Scripps Networks Interactive (SNI) helped gain the lifestyle entertainment company recognition as a Green Achiever by the Greater Knoxville Business Journal's online sustainability portal, GoGreenET.
SNI holds a media portfolio that includes the popular brands HGTV, DIY Network, Food Network, Cooking Channel, Travel Channel, and country music network Great American Country.
After gaining LEED Gold certification for its Knoxville headquarters and recognizing the need for a coordinated sustainability program, SNI contracted DNV KEMA to develop a roadmap for implementing and measuring the company's sustainability, including small-scale adjustments such as encouraging employee carpooling as well as large-scale efforts such as promoting the move toward a paperless office, creating green facility guidelines, and greening procurement practices.
Most of the roadmap will be achieved with low- and no-cost measures, and early calculations show that these smart businesses choices could deliver substantial savings in paper, printing, and travel costs.
Employee engagement is a strong driver of the roadmap, and the process of engaging and learning from employees began during the roadmap development.
DNV KEMA built the roadmap by assessing SNI's operations from its roots, first helping company executives to develop overarching corporate sustainability focus areas and subsequently organizing existing and new strategies under these focus areas in order to achieve the company's sustainability goals. From engaging company staff in employee workshops, to strategizing methods to reduce the company's carbon footprint, DNV KEMA sought to provide an all-inclusive and long-term plan that could be applied to the company as a whole, as well as its individual departments and employees. The award-winning program was co-created with Minimal Productions, an environmental consulting firm specializing in the entertainment and hospitality industries.
Elizabeth Durney, DNV KEMA Energy and Sustainability project manager, indicates that Scripps Networks Interactive's approach is unique. "I'm impressed by the strategic approach SNI is taking to sustainability," she says. "SNI has a fundamental interest in carefully building a program that directly parallels the company's values, engages employees, and delivers financial returns. Rather than present a focus on marketing, this roadmap is about living the company values."
