Developer goes green in Spanish homes venture

- (1888PressRelease) October 06, 2010 - You might have thought the market for new property developments in Spain was saturated - but a Wiltshire businessman is proving the doubters wrong.
Alex Joll is behind a scheme to build a sustainable housing development on the Spanish coastline. Despite turbulent economic conditions on both sides of the sea, he has pulled the feat off. And the Spanish property market's dubious reputation has only spurred the 43-year-old entrepreneur on. Mr Joll, from Bradford on Avon, wanted to create something different to other developments in Spain.
He launched his company Atlantic Parks in 2006 and began preparing the plans for the 66-acre forest site he had acquired for development.
Having recently secured finance for the second phase of his Costa de la Luz development, Atlantic Forest Park, Mr Joll is hopeful that it will continue to attract buyers.
"The park is located in the countryside well away from extensively developed areas, such as those you find on the Costa de Sol," he said.
"I did a lot of research and I found clear advantages linked with timber homes. Not only are they made of natural materials and designed to suit hot climates, they also don't attract tax and council rates like other developments do."
The eco-lodges, which are run from predominately solar energy all year round, are produced using sustainable timber.
The first phase of the development includes 35 homes, a pool, clubhouse, shop and bar. Lodges are now being sold in the second phase.
"Our first park has been really well received," he added. "Some of the property owners live there year- round, while others use it as a holiday destination and rent it out during the rest of the year."
The entrepreneur admits to being motivated by the somewhat negative reputation attached to the Spanish property market. "We are conscious of the bad reputation that developers in Spain have so we set ourselves apart by over-delivering," he said.
