Detroit Non-Profit Receives 1.1 Million in US Department of Labor YouthBuild Funding
Through this grant award, the SER YouthBuild Construction Institute will continue to change lives through education, empowerment, and the chance for participants to build and serve their community.
- Detroit, MI (1888PressRelease) October 06, 2015 - SER Metro- Detroit, Jobs for Progress, Inc., was awarded a $1.1 million dollar grant from the US Department of Labor to continue operating its YouthBuild program. This is SER's 4th three-year cycle of grant funding and to date, the SER YouthBuild Construction Institute has served more than 200 young adults by providing a program that combines GED preparation, hands-on construction skills training, leadership development, civic responsibility, job placement, and enrollment in post-secondary education. Participants have an opportunity to become AmeriCorps service members through volunteer learning experience and receive a $1500.00 scholarship award upon completion of requirements.
SER is an Affiliate Member of YouthBuild USA and one of 50 Detroit community agencies who have committed to President Obama's employment initiative: My Brother's Keeper. YouthBuild's mission aligns closely with the goals of this national initiative which seeks to address persistent opportunity gaps facing boys and young men of color and ensures that all young people can realize their full potential.
