  • (1888PressRelease) July 13, 2012 - To read more about this celebration of British business success in Asia, go to www.businessinasia.co.uk/case-studies. The Delcam case study is on www.ukti.gov.uk/en_us/uktihome/successStory/322720.html.

"As UKTI’s Asia Task Force, we are looking for the most inspiring UK-based companies from all industry sectors to demonstrate the success of, and demand for, UK innovation, products and services in 12 of the most dynamic markets in Asia,” explained Mo Dowlut, Executive Officer at UKTI. "This showcase of business success by UK companies like Delcam will help to raise awareness of the opportunities that exist across the Asian markets, and inspire and motivate others to grow and expand their business there.”

Delcam always had ambitions to become a global company, from its formal founding in 1997, after the initial development work at Cambridge University. More than 30 years later, the company is now represented throughout Asia and gets nearly a quarter of its business from the region.

"Our success in Asia has been essential in reaching our position as the world’s leading specialist supplier of CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) software and services,” stated Delcam’s Marketing Manager, Peter Dickin. "It has also contributed to our winning three Queen’s Awards for International Trade.”

Delcam now has wholly-owned subsidiaries in China, India, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore and joint ventures Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong. "We have a different approach to many companies in that all our employees in our various Asian operations are local to the country,” Mr Dickin explained. "We have been extremely lucky in finding some excellent partners that are exceptionally talented people with a real passion for our business. For example, we have worked with our joint venture partners in Korea and Taiwan for more than twenty-five years, while the Managing Director of our Indian subsidiary was the first employee when it was originally established.”

Even having such well-established representation in the area doesn’t remove the need for good communications from the Birmingham headquarters to the region. Delcam staff from the Chief Executive, Clive Martell, downwards make regular visits to Asia. In particular, the technical staff attend regular training events and user meetings to keep both local Delcam staff and customers up to date with the latest development in the company’s software. All this travel is essential in developing the personal relationships that are still vital to Asian customers, according to Mr. Dickin.

"UKTI has given significant support over the many yearsthat we have operated in Asia, including organising trade missions and helping us at exhibitions,” said Mr. Dickin. "We are happy to support the Asia Task Force in its drive to encourage more UK companies to increase their businesses by exporting to Asia”
