Deaf Community Marched on the Nation's Capital to Bring Heightened Awareness
to Deaf Issues.
Washington, DC-MD-VA-WV (1888PressRelease) October 14, 2015 - On September 5-6, 2015, the Deaf community came together in protest on the streets of Washington D.C. to bring attention to Deaf issues that are not receiving adequate attention from the government and community as a whole.
Protest leader Charlton Lachase was the victim of excessive force by policemen. In the incident, his jaw was injured while he was attempting to request an interpreter. No interpreter was given at jail or in the hospital. This incident, and knowledge of many similar incidents, spurred a desire within him to bring awareness to these problems that plague many within the Deaf community. Lachase was inspired by his mother to stand up and take action. She helped him realize "we could all get together, cooperate, and protest. It would gain recognition for the Deaf community, and make people realize we need to improve and fix our problems."
While the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) exists, many Deaf people still face challenges in everyday life such as difficulty finding employment, discrimination in the hiring process, inability to secure fair education, and access to equal communication such as VRI interpreting. This should anger every individual, as the Deaf are promised equal rights under the law regardless of disability or any other discriminatory factor.

Joel Barish is leading the charge for Deaf rights and through DeafNation is creating a movement for social change that is impacting the world. DeafNation wants information about the protest and video footage to be the topic of discussion on Capitol Hill and in local governments in order to facilitate change and bring equal communication to all.
