  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) May 17, 2012 - More than fifteen completely new paintings created this year plus many new welded steel sculptures will be in David Tobey's solo show "Abstract imaginaries 2012" at Pleiades Gallery, 530 West 25th Street in New York from May 15th through June 9th. The opening reception for the show is Saturday May 19th from 3 to 6 p.m., with live entertainment by noted keyboard artist Kirk Ehrenreich and complimentary refreshments. All are invited to attend.

In Tobey's own words, the paintings in this show are a departure from most of his previous art over the past ten years: "Evolution is a life process. My artistic journey has taken me to a place of both 'reductionism' - the hunt for the smallest building blocks of more complex organisms - and a 'synthesis' of past artistic endeavors. . . . . Many miniature paintings exist in the details of my more complicated compositions, and in working with many of the same formal elements I also had visions of Asian calligraphy - 'saying more with less'. . . .My newest paintings, the 'Imaginaries' are Rorschach tests for the viewer". Tobey is a Juilliard graduate and professional musician as well as a visual artist, and this is his sixth annual solo exhibition at this gallery, founded in 1974 as one of New York's first strictly juried artists' co-ops.

His work has been commented upon in reviews as "a synaesthetic relationship between abstraction and music . . . the connection between linear and musical rhythms" (NY Times, 3/14/04); ". . .human drama, subconscious imagery, and a playful imagination, all coalesce in paintings and sculpture" (Art in America, 9/07); his sculpture as having " . . .a unique draftsmanly fluidity in metal, surpassing even that of [Julio] Gonzalez" (Gallery & Studio), 1/07).

"Through his use of vibrant color and his innate musical talents, David stimulates his viewer's senses by allowing them to experience a psychedelic 'mind-manifesting' interpretation of his subject," (Kathleen Masterson, Curator, White Plains Museum Gallery, solo show 3/30/11 - 6/15/11); and ". . .each of his canvases carries his distinctive sense of musicality and visual dynamics. He was a natural selection for 'Contemporary Rhythms,' [a group exhibition of work by artists designed to be particularly of interest to interior designers & corporate art consultants] currently on view at Horizon in Fleetwood, NY" (Kathleen Reckling, ArtsWestchester Gallery Director (3/13 - 6/15).

Tobey, a resident of Westchester County, NY had his most recent solo exhibitions in 2011 at the White Plains Museum, (3/30-6/15) followed by a show of his sculpture at Rye Town Park, (10/22-11/9). This year his work was in group shows with the New Rochelle Council on The Arts (3/11-3/28); it is currently also at Horizon in Fleetwood, NY (3/13-6/15) and at the White Plains Library (through June 15th). His work was also in The Blue Door Artists' Association 4th Juried Group Show in Yonkers, NY (3/14-4/21), and in the CAG (Contemporary Artists' Guild) group show at in the gallery at the office of the Manhattan Borough President in New York City (4/3-4/27).
