  • Dallas, TX (1888PressRelease) October 14, 2011 - More than 100,000 children in Dallas County are left home alone when school is out each day, leaving them vulnerable to bad choices, predators, and other problems connected with lack of supervision. These children also miss academic enrichment opportunities that studies show are one of the leading elements to fighting the dropout rate.

Dallas AfterSchool Network, (DASN) in partnership with Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) and imc˛, is launching an aggressive three-month long awareness campaign, designed to spotlight the importance of afterschool programming to our community. The campaign asks "Who Cares About Tomorrow" to underscore the importance of providing quality afterschool programs for our community's children. With deep budget cuts in education across all North Texas public school districts the academic support and enrichment programs provided to children in the afternoon are more important than ever. The hope is that individuals in our community will respond to "WhoCaresAboutTomorrow" and register with DASN to volunteer with or otherwise support organizations that provide care for children during out of school time.

On Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 10 a.m. DASN will kick-off the WhoCaresAboutTomorrow campaign on the front porch of its headquarters at 2902 Swiss Ave. Local afterschool providers, DASN staff, and community leaders will join the rally wearing t-shirts declaring "iDo" in answer to the "Who Cares About Tomorrow" question DASN leaders will be asking the North Texas community. The kick-off will coincide with national Lights on Afterschool Day, which is a national day of celebration for afterschool, with more than 7,500 events occurring across the country.

The purpose of the WhoCaresAboutTomorrow campaign is to inform our community about the importance of afterschool time, and to inspire individuals to volunteer and possibly change a child's life.

"Dallas AfterSchool Network believes in the value of quality afterschool programs to inspire learning and provide hope for tomorrow amongst our most vulnerable students. The three hours from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. can be used to change a life," said Tanya McDonald, DASN's executive director.

The WhoCaresAboutTomorrow campaign was the brain trust of imc˛, a Dallas-based purpose-inspired strategic and creative marketing agency. The agency invested $80,000 in creative resources to the project, which included designs for buses, posters for train stations, a website, social media platforms and more.

DART has donated advertising space on the sides of 25 and Titan Outdoor also donated advertising on 20 windscreens at DART rail stations throughout North Texas.

DART buses will be rolling through the city with the campaign question on their sides from October 1 to December 18, 2011 hoping to drive people to the website www.whocaresabouttomorrow.org and participate in the campaign by adding their afterschool story to an archive that is being collected, finding a program in which they would like to volunteer or donate supplies or money. They can also post pictures and stories on Facebook and Twitter.

"Like any business, imc˛ is full of smart, creative people who arrived here in part because of the learning and enrichment opportunities they had earlier in their lives," said Jonathan Feinstein, positive impact coordinator. "We supported this project because we recognize how important education is to us personally, to our business and to the future of Dallas. We value the work that DASN is doing to bring quality afterschool programs to our children, and we believe one of the most effective ways we can support that work is by lending our time and professional talents."

"Dallas AfterSchool Network is grateful for the partnership of imc˛ and DART to make this campaign possible. Both organizations immediately understood our objective of raising awareness of the importance of the availability and quality of afterschool programs for all children in North Texas," said McDonald. "This partnership is an illustration of what is possible when public entities and for-profit companies deploy their expertise to support the education of our community's children."
