Cystic Fibrosis Foundation names Bilzin Sumberg Attorneys among the "40 Under 40" Outstanding Lawyers of Miami-Dade County
Jay M. Sakalo, Practice Group Leader and partner in Bilzin Sumberg Baena Price & Axelrod's and Russell Koonin, associate in the firm were recognized as two of The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's "40 Under 40" Outstanding Lawyers of Miami-Dade County.

Sakalo, Practice Group Leader and partner in Bilzin Sumberg Baena Price & Axelrod's Restructuring & Bankruptcy Group, and Russell Koonin, associate in the firm's Litigation Group, were recognized as two of The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's "40 Under 40" Outstanding Lawyers of Miami-Dade County. The "40 Under 40" award honors rising stars of Miami-Dade County for their dedication to providing outstanding legal service and for their commitment to improving the community. The 40 honorees were feted at the benefit dinner on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at the Coral Gables Country Club.
Recently named among the Best Lawyers in America, Mr. Sakalo has served as counsel to numerous debtors, creditors' committees and purchasers of assets in complex chapter 11 cases and handles all facets of bankruptcy reorganizations and bankruptcy litigation. In addition to this distinction, Mr. Sakalo's professional accomplishments have been recognized in Chambers USA, SuperLawyers, Florida Trend's Legal Elite, South Florida Legal Guide (Top Lawyers in South Florida).
Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Koonin was in private practice, which was preceded by his service of eight years as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida. While in the criminal division of the US Attorney's Office, Mr. Koonin headed the Safe Neighborhood and Safe Childhood Projects, where he dedicated his efforts to combating local violent gangs, and protecting the community's children from sexual abuse and trafficking. In addition, Mr. Koonin is involved locally with the Federal Bar Association, Continuing Legal Education Committee and the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, Leadership Development Institute.
