  • Syracuse, NY (1888PressRelease) August 18, 2012 - In order to improve the lifestyle and culture in Syracuse, the city's transportation planner Paul Mercurio and Andrew Maxwell, director of planning and sustainability have presented on the efforts to make the city bicycle-rider friendly in a meeting held at the Syracuse Common Council chambers.

Members of the Neighborhood Preservation Committee, Common Councilors Van Robinson, Jake Barret and Jean Kessner were also present during the meeting. Several bike enthusiasts attended the meeting as well as share stories about bicycle riding in the city.

"The plan is still very much in the planning stages", Mercurio stated. His office has exerted efforts to consolidating suggestions and feedbacks from the community for more than a year now and had accepted commentaries on bicycle riders need and want. This feedback mechanism formed the foundation of the plan which will be presented to the Common Council by fall.
Last Sunday, August 5, the Cycle in the City event was held at the Inner Harbour parking lot on West Kirkpatrick Street for a 10-mile ride. According to the city's website, the event is a "guided tour of a different city neighborhood." But if you missed that one, you can still get behind the wheel a few Sunday from now, on September 9 and October 14. Just remember that riders must be at least 12 years old and, if under 16, must be accompanied by an adult. Helmets are mandatory!

The City of Syracuse's Bike Plan was built upon the mandate recently passed by the New York State called Complete Streets and results from the Syracuse Metropolitan Transportation Council (SMTC)'s report in 2008, entitled "University Hill Bike Network Project." The Comprehensive Plan of the City of Syracuse, written and adopted since 2005, should "reflect the community's vision for its future and outline policies for the City to pursue through regulations, operations, and its budget to achieve that vision," according to the city's official website. Best practices from nearby cities such as New York City and Montreal, Quebec as well as Cities in Portland, Oregon and Copenhagen, Denmark were studied and tweaked to fit Syracuse's needs.
