These sophisticated scams, which use fake e-mails to deceive individuals into wiring funds to criminals, have been classified as Business E-mail Compromise (BEC) crimes by the FBI. Senator Jeff Baron, Bermuda’s national security minister, issued a warning about these threats, urging residents to be cautious as they become more common following similar attacks in the United States.
To combat this rising threat, the Bermuda Government has partnered with Secure Messaging Systems to offer RMail, an advanced e-mail service designed to provide security against such attacks. RMail offers robust protections, including anti-whaling technology, encryption, and certified delivery proof.
