"'Like Enemies of the State' by BeFrank Theatre Company gives a realistic insight into the issues that our organisation works with surrounding children living in conflict zones in some of the most dangerous countries in the world." (Marina Abraham, War Child UK 2013)
'Like Enemies of the State' is based on the true story of three child soldiers from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. After managing to escape from one of the world's most hideous wars, they find that life is no longer free for them. They are stuck facing an existence of poverty, outcast from society. A life which is so unbearable that their only other option is to rejoin the war.
Through the stories of these three child soldiers, BeFrank has been able to give their audience an insight into the problems facing children in times of war, with particular focus on the struggles that children face growing up in the war-torn Democratic Republic of the Congo. It also gives its audience the chance to consider new and ever increasing difficulties that children face in today's world, such as poverty and gang warfare.
'Like Enemies of the State' is typical of BeFrank Theatre Company, who pride themselves on showing carefully researched, thought-provoking and emotive dramatisations of real-life events. Artistic director Tommy Lexen, spent three weeks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo researching the contents of the play. His research included interviews with street children, former child soldiers and the Congolese government.
"It is increasingly rare to find theatre companies that tackle large social issues and topics with the needed rigorous research and diligence to provide real authority and useful insights to their subject" - David Byrne, Artistic Director, New Diorama Theatre
