Documentary "Out on a Limb" about advances in prosthetics for amputees launches a crowdfunding campaign using website IndieGoGo.com (similar to the popular Kickstarter.com) to cover remaining post-production costs.
- (1888PressRelease) June 08, 2011 - "OUT ON A LIMB," a documentary about the science of prosthetics, nears completion, and Producer/Director Daria Price will be launching a crowdfunding campaign via the website Indiegogo.com to raise funds for post production expenses to finish the film.
From Walter Reed Army Medical Center to university labs across the country to the Amputee Coalition's camp for kids, "OUT ON A LIMB" takes us on a trip through an intriguing science that is changing what it means to lose a limb.
Advances in prosthetics always coincide with wars. But the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have spurred unprecedented focus and funding, just as emerging technologies and developments in neuroscience are providing opportunities that never existed before.
Soldiers who have lost limbs understandably receive the most media attention and the most advanced prosthetics, but they are only a fraction of the 2 million amputees in the US alone. Every day over 500 Americans lose a limb to diabetes, peripheral artery disease, cancer, and accidents. Many millions more around the world lose limbs to landmines, disease, wars, and earthquakes.
So who will this transformative science actually reach? And who is still fighting for prosthetics that have been available for years? In America, it's often easier to replace a failing organ than to replace a failing prosthesis.
"OUT ON A LIMB" and crowdfunding: IndieGoGo.com is a fundraising website that harnesses the power of networks, interested parties, and associations to help raise money and spread awareness about a multitude of projects. About the Producer-Director: DARIA PRICE
Daria Price is a filmmaker with a diverse background, who works in both documentary and fiction films. She produced, wrote, directed, and edited the award-winning SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST, a satirical mystery that lampoons America's obsession with youth and beauty, which won several awards domestically and internationally and was featured on Comcast's On Demand Cutting Edge series. She was a field producer and videographer on Canada's Vision TV documentary series, TWIST OF FAITH, and on HDnet's World Report documentary, THE SILENT EPIDEMIC: DIABETES IN KIDS, and she has produced, directed and shot science and tech stories with Elsash-TV for APTN, BBC, and HDnet.
