Valentina Stewart Watson began her career in 1990 in Los Angeles, California as an associate at Hill & Weis, a business law firm that specialized in real estate and corporate law. Two years later, she became a sole proprietor, taking on a securities broker who defrauded an elderly man and won.
Now, as owner of the Law Offices of Valentina Stewart Watson, Inc., Mrs. Watson practices primarily in the areas of real estate, business, and estate planning, with expertise in both litigation and transactions. As the business owner and president of the corporation, she is responsible for generating the legal work, hiring and supervising employees, paying the bills associated with the business, advertising and promoting the business, participating in continuing legal education seminars and conferences when possible, attending Bar Association conventions, and more.
"I believe firmly in having another set of eyes to proofread work, so I use my legal assistant, whom I highly value, for this purpose," Mrs. Watson noted. "As a lawyer for my own firm, approximately 50% of my workload is litigation and 50% is transactional."
Living and working in Lahaina, Hawaii is the perfect fit for Mrs. Watson because it is tailored to her personal life, including family and community service. Living with her husband, daughter, and mother, she is on two community boards of directors and one that is related to her profession that is Supreme Court appointed. She is also a member of Maui County Bar Association, Hawaii State Bar Association, and the Better Business Bureau where she currently has an A+ rating since 2004.
Being named Maui County Lawyer of the Year in 2000, Mrs. Watson hopes to continue winning as many litigation cases as possible and maybe become appointed judge someday, even per diem, because she feels she is a very fair person. She also would love to develop a legal aid branch in West Maui so that low-income people who live there could have access to legal services without having to take the bus for an hour or more to get to the only place on the island that currently provides legal services to the indigent.
