Covington Who's Who Selects Steven Cann as an Honored Member of the Executive and Professional Registry
The selection recognizes Steven Cann's commitment to excellence in Higher Education and Law.
- Topeka, KS (1888PressRelease) July 28, 2015 - Steven Cann, Professor of Political Science and Pre-Law Coordinator at Washburn University of Topeka, has been selected as an Honored Member of the Covington Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry.
Initially planning to teach at the high school level upon completion of his bachelor's degree, Steven Cann quickly discovered that teaching in such a capacity was not a good fit for him. Offered a graduate scholarship by his professors while completing his undergrad degree, he began to entertain the thought of becoming a college professor instead.
"My immediate supervisor at my first academic teaching job was a superior mentor and role model who advanced my prelaw advising skills by sending me to workshops and encouraging my teaching and research," Mr. Cann said about the invaluable guidance he received early on.
For the last 38 years, Mr. Cann has been teaching at the college level. Currently a Professor and Pre-Law Coordinator at Washburn University of Topeka, his first responsibility is teaching law-related classes to undergraduates who wish to attend law school. As the university prelaw coordinator, Mr. Cann coordinates undergraduate prelaw activities and works with the law school on those activities that require synchronization. He also works with the six faculty prelaw advisors underneath him with the goal of successful admission of his students into law school.
Mr. Cann completed his BS and MS in Political Science at North Dakota State University in 1970 and 1972, respectively. Five years later, he had earned his PhD in Political Science at Purdue University. He successfully completed 18 professional presentations and panel discussions, as well as 10 workshop presentations and 11 articles written in professional journals. He is the author of a popular textbook in an esoteric field (administrative law), which is now in its fourth edition, called 'Administrative Law'. Mr. Cann received numerous teaching awards and recognitions, too, and has been involved with university, community, and professional service, including being elected to represent the faculty before the Board of Regents. He served as president of a statewide professional organization for public administration, called American Society of Public Administration, is an active member of Heartland Mediators Association and and Mortar Board National Honor Society, and is an active volunteer mediator for his community.
